Georgian Bewdley – Lecture 9.4.24

On Tuesday 9th April at 7.30pm, at St George’s Hall Bewdley, current BHRG Chairman will be delivering a lecture entitled Georgian Bewdley, a lesson in classical architecture. The lecture is the final event in the 2023 – 2024 calendar of lectures organised by Bewdley Civic Society. This will be the second such lecture given by Francis, who has been invited back by the Society to provide a follow-up to his very popular talk of two years ago, entitled Bewdley’s Classical Doors and Doorways.

Francis will use the lecture on 9th April to launch his new book, Georgian Bewdley: An Architectural Guide, which will be available to purchase on the night. The book is a BHRG publication and all proceeds from the sale of the book will go to support the work of BHRG.

All are welcome to the lecture, for which the entry fee is £5, or £3 for Civic Society members.

Below is a copy of the blurb of the new book.

Georgian Bewdley: An Architectural Guide provides a comprehensive introduction to the many Georgian buildings to be found in this small riverside town in Worcestershire.

The buildings surveyed have all been listed as Grade II or above and the text draws upon  Listed Building descriptions to explain their architectural features.

The author presents original research into the measurements and proportions governing some of the town’s most important classical doors and doorways.

The text is enhanced by over 300 original photographs taken by the author. Many historical notes and observations are included alongside the architectural narrative.

The book is organised in four short town walks which guide the reader through a century of architectural history.

An illustrated glossary explains over 100 features of classical architecture, all of which can be found in Bewdley and are referred to in the text.

This book will be of special interest to all those who know and love Worcestershire’s most perfect Georgian town.

It will be equally fascinating for anyone who enjoys and values the Georgian heritage of England’s historic towns and villages.
