Tangyes and Parkers of Tickenhill
Tickenhill Manor in Bewdley, Worcestershire, has been a medieval manor house, a royal palace, a Georgian mansion, a private residence and, perhaps most surprisingly of all, an important folk museum. Many Bewdley residents will be aware of the part it played in Tudor history as the location of the proxy marriage of Prince Arthur to Catherine of Aragon in 1499. Relatively few are likely to be aware that the royal ownership of Tickenhill ceased in 1873, with the sale of the remaining Crown lands in Bewdley. In this enthralling and personal account, Jim Parker takes up his narrative at the moment when his great grandfather Joseph Tangye purchased the house, which was then in a state of disrepair. He goes on to tell the story of how his grandparents Fred and Alice Parker turned the historic house into a private folk museum. At Tickenhill they created a collection of local, national and international significance, leaving behind an enormous legacy which lives on today at the Worcestershire County Museum in Hartlebury Castle.
Jim Parker has been familiar with Tickenhill and the Tickenhill Collection since early childhood. In this welcome addition to the history of Bewdley, he recalls his grandparents with affection and respect and is able to bring to life the remarkable story of what happened to Tickenhill in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
