Georgian Bewdley: An Architectural Guide provides a comprehensive introduction to the fascinating array of Georgian buildings to be found in one small riverside town in Worcestershire. All the buildings discussed date from the late 17th, 18th, or early 19th centuries. All are classical in design and belong to the great tradition of Greek and Roman architecture. The buildings discussed have all been listed as Grade II or above by Historic England and the text draws upon the buildings’ official listed building descriptions in order to clarify their architectural features. The author presents original research into the measurements and proportions governing some of the town’s most important classical doors and doorways. The text is enhanced by over 200 original photographs taken by the author. Many historical notes and observations are included alongside the architectural narrative. The account is organised along chronological lines as well as topographical lines, so that the reader with four short town walks which guide the reader through a century of architectural history. The book finishes with a useful illustrated glossary which explains over 100 features of classical architecture, all of which can be found in Bewdley and are referred to in the text. This book will be of special interest to all those who know and love Worcestershire’s most perfect Georgian town. At the same time, it is not just about one town, but about the principal features of the English classical building tradition. Dr Francis Mohan has degrees in Classics, Theology and Philosophy and has a long-standing interest in historic houses and buildings. He is a retired teacher with many years’ experience of teaching, researching and public speaking. He lives in Bewdley and is a lifetime member of Bewdley Civic Society and a member of Bewdley Historical Research Group.
